Renewable Energy Sources in EU and Bulgaria
- According to Eurostat data for 2013 the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the total energy consumption in Bulgaria amounts to 19%. This means that Bulgaria has overachieved the set by the EC 16% target for stimulating the production of green energy by 2020;
- The potential for renewable energy in Bulgaria is undisputed and there are objective opportunities for continued development of the sector;
- Preferential prices for the purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources makes the sector attractive for investment;
- However, the lack of stability in the regulatory framework of the sector is a major weakness, which should be overcome in the future;
- An ongoing discussion and consultation on the new structure of the electricity market in the EU focuses on facilitating investment in renewable and low carbon energy and the interaction between countries in this sector.
